Crown

« Back to Glossary Index

Crowns are artificial tooth cap that cover a tooth or dental implant that’s damaged. Crowns can be used to restore the shape, size, strength and appearance of the tooth.

Crowns fit over the entire tooth, like a tight-fitting cap. In order for the crown to fit, the dentist will need to trim some enamel off the tooth and then bond the new crown in place.

When Should I Get a Dental Crown?

Your tooth is weak or damaged – for example, after a large filling, fracture or extensive decay.

Following a root canal treatment – teeth often become fragile and are more likely to crack after root canal treatment so are often protected by a crown.

If your tooth is broken or badly worn down – crowns can restore the shape and function of the tooth.

If you are getting a bridge – crowns are used to anchor the bridge in place.

For cosmetic reasons – to cover teeth that are discoloured, misshapen or badly aligned.

With dental implants – a crown is placed on top of the implant to replace the missing tooth

We provide natural-looking crowns at our Cheadle dental implants clinic, serving patients from Manchester and surrounding areas. Crowns can be made from ceramic, porcelain, or metal depending on patient needs.
