Osseointegration

« Back to Glossary Index

Osseointegration also known as direct skeletal fixation is where the jawbone fuses with your dental implant, providing a secure base for a crown, bridge or denture to be attached to. As part of the natural healing process, the bone both grows directly onto the implant and also around it. The result is a very strong, permanent and stable link that effectively makes the implant part of the skeleton itself. Successful osseointegration is key to long term implant success.

Benefits of implant osseointegration

  • Stability and Longevity: When osseointegration is successful, the implant can become stable, act as a natural tooth, and last a long time with proper care.
  • Bone Preservation: Osseointegration helps prevent bone loss and facial collapse associated with tooth loss.
  • Functionality: Implants work with bite function, properly distributing forces when chewing and speaking, essential for long-term success and a confident smile.
  • Improved Health: By stabilising the implant and promoting proper chewing function, osseointegration helps maintain the health of surrounding teeth and bone.
  • Eliminates Socket Problems: Direct skeletal attachment eliminates the need for traditional sockets, avoiding common socket-related issues like skin irritation, pain, and sweating.

Our Cheadle implant team monitors patients throughout this process to ensure implants are healing properly for residents of Manchester, Stockport, and beyond.
