Your Dental Implant Questions Answered: What to Expect Before, During and After Treatment

Dental implants are one of the most common and successful tooth replacement options — and for good reason. They are strong, comfortable and look completely natural. Dental implants also can last for decades. Still, it’s normal to have questions about dental implants treatment, recovery and long-term results. Here are answers to some of the most common questions patients have about dental implants.

How long should implantation bleeding last?

Implant bleeding after the surgery is normal. Oozing may occur for up to 24 to 48 hours. It may take up small amounts of blood mixed with saliva that will make it look more dramatic than it is. Bite gently on gauze pads to help control the bleeding and avoid any vigorous activity during the first day or two.

If bleeding persists beyond 48 hours or becomes heavy, it’s time to call your dentist and let him or her know that the surgical site might need more attention.

How long does implantation pain last?

Mild to moderate pain is normal after dental implant surgery. For most people, it feels more like soreness or tenderness around the implant area rather than an intense or sharp pain. In general, the pain is worst at 24–48 hours and then slowly begins to improve over the next few days. Most patients feel much better by days five to seven, and any remaining discomfort can usually be managed with an over-the-counter painkiller. If the pain starts to get worse rather than better, contact your dentist or oral surgeon to ensure the implant site is healing properly.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care, dental implants are considered a long-term or even permanent solution for tooth loss. On average, dental implants can last 15 to 25 years or more. The titanium post is very strong and should last a lifetime, but the crown (top part of the tooth) may need to be replaced after 10-20 years due to normal wear and tear. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups, as well as avoiding smoking, can help to prolong the life of your implant.

How long does a dental implant take to heal?

Healing time varies depending on individual factors such as bone density, overall health and whether bone grafting was required. In most cases, it takes around three to six months for the implant to fully fuse with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration.
During this time, you may be fitted with a temporary crown to maintain appearance and function. Once healing is complete, your permanent restoration can be placed, providing a stable and natural-looking replacement tooth.

How long does dental implant surgery take?

Typically, the procedure is much faster than most people imagine. The placement of one dental implant can be completed in as little as 30 minutes to an hour. If several implants are necessary, the procedure may last up to two to three hours. The dentist will take time to ensure that you’re comfortable during the entire process. Local anaesthesia or sedation may be used to help you relax during the procedure. Your appointment length will also depend on whether or not the dentist must perform additional procedures at the same time, like a tooth extraction or bone grafting.

Dental implants are a safe and reliable way to restore your smile. Although the healing and treatment time can vary from one patient to the next, most find that the long-term benefits of the procedure — improved confidence, function and overall oral health — are well worth the time. If you have any questions about dental implants or wish to find out if you are a candidate, schedule a consultation with your dentist.
